Why Conservatives Should Support the Strengthened Child Tax Credit
May 13, 2025At ACLJ Action, we believe the American family is the cornerstone of our republic. Strong families mean a strong nation. That’s why we’re supporting Congress’ recent effort to expand and strengthen the Child Tax Credit (CTC)—a pro-family, pro-work, and pro-life policy that helps working families thrive without growing government dependency.
What’s in the Proposal?
The current proposal does five key things:
- Raises the maximum Child Tax Credit from $2,000 to $2,500 through 2028 – Giving parents more of their hard-earned money back to support their children.
- Makes the $2,000 maximum credit permanent starting in 2029 – Providing long-term certainty to working families.
- Indexes the credit to inflation after 2029 – Ensuring the value of the credit keeps pace with rising costs.
- Keeps the current refundability structure – Rewarding work by tying the refundable portion of the credit to earned income, not just filing a return.
- Requires a valid Social Security Number (SSN) for both parents – Preserving the integrity of the credit and ensuring it goes to legal U.S. taxpayers.
Why It Matters
It is targeted tax relief for working families. It rewards personal responsibility, work, and promotes the American family. It helps families put food on the table, afford childcare, or cover the rising cost of living. And it does so without growing bureaucracy or tying people to the welfare state.
We especially applaud the decision to require SSNs for both parents. This provision aligns with ACLJ Action’s longstanding advocacy for the rule of law and immigration accountability. Tax credits should benefit those who follow the law—not incentivize lawbreaking.
A Pro-Life Policy With Economic Common Sense
Support for families doesn’t end at birth. Conservatives must lead the charge in making it more affordable and sustainable for Americans to raise children. At a time when birth rates are declining and the economic burden of parenthood is rising, this Child Tax Credit update sends a powerful message: We value children. We value parents. And we value the American family.
Congress Is Getting This Right
This is how tax policy should work: simple, targeted, moral, and growth-oriented. Congress’ bipartisan effort on this front is something worth celebrating—and defending. At ACLJ Action, we’ll continue to advocate for policies that empower families, uphold conservative principles, and protect the American Dream for future generations.
